Abstract:
During the Edo period in Japan, Nagasaki
Tōtsūji was an indispensable presence in Chinese and Japanese civil trade. More than seventy families of Chinese ancestry served as Tõtsūji. The highest position within the Tõtsūji group was ōtsūji. A family with many õtsūji is called a “famous family”.The formation of a “famous family” is closely related to the identity of ancestors, the number of separations and exceptional promotion. A few families have created a monopoly on high positions within the group. After the nineteenth century, although the power po of the “famous family” still existed, the phenomenon of becoming an õtsūji through strength also emerged.
