要旨：
1853(嘉永6)年アメリカから外交交渉のため来日したペリーは、日本人がアメリカ合衆国についての知識が豊富であることを知り驚いたことは有名な逸話である。そのとき、アメリカ側の日誌には、交渉にあたった日本人(オランダ通詞)は、初代大統領のジョージ・ ワシントンについて話したことが記録されている。事実、日本では蘭学者の箕作省吾や箕作阮甫が著した『坤輿図識』とその続編がきっかけにワシントンが知られ始めたが、オランダから伝わった情報の内容や、オランダ側ならびに日本側の社会的背景については未解明の点がある。本論文では、19世紀前半のオランダにおいて形成された「ワシントン」イメージの形成過程を踏まえながら、日本に伝播されたイメージとの比較を通して、日本における西洋偉人伝受容のトランスナショナルな特性について検討する。
Abstract：
It is a well-known anecdote that M. C. Perry, who came to Japan from the U.S. in 1853 for diplomatic negotiations, was surprised to learn that the Japanese were very knowledgeable about the United States. At that time, the logbooks of the U.S. side record that the Japanese negotiator (a tsuji, Dutch-Japanese translator) had mentioned the first president of the United States, George Washington. In fact, Washington had become a well-known figure in Japan after the Dutch scholars Shogo Mitsukuri and Genpo Mitsukuri wrote the most-updated world geography books. The content of the information transmitted from the Netherlands and the social background of the Dutch and Japanese sides are, however, yet unclear. Thus, this paper examines the transnational nature of the formation of Western biographies of great men in Japan by comparing the image of “Washington” formed in the Netherlands in the first half of the 19th century with the image that was transmitted to Japan.
