Abstract:
From the early 17th century to the mid-19th century, private trade between China and Japan flourished. In Nagasaki, the major trade port of Japan, there was a team of “ToTsuji (Chinese Interpreters)dedicated to providing translation services for the trade between the two countries. This professional translation team was made up of more than 70 families who had emigrated to Japan and had been engaged in Nagasaki’s trade for more than two centuries through a hereditary succession of positions. The inheritance of the translation profession by the ToTsuji in Nagasaki was a crucial guarantee for providing continuOLIS language support and facilitating maritime trade in a bilingual and bicultural environment. Their experience can provide historical reference for the cultivation of contemporary business translation talents.
